Breastfeeding in Public

Divine breastfeeding

Seeing lots of divinity and learning how to better support breastfeeding mothers at the La Leche League conference this weekend.

Lots of great speakers coming up throughout the day today and tomorrow.  You can still purchase a one-day pass at

Does breastfeeding have to be hard?

I have to wonder how we survived as a species without hospitals and IBCLCs for so long.  I think it goes back to the possibility that birth and breastfeeding are behaviors that are learned best by watching and participating.

When we see and honor undisturbed birth, when we accept or acknowledge that the pain of childbirth is meant to inform and transform us, and it is not something that has to be inherently feared, we can start to take back birth.

Breastfeeding benefits the whole family

What a perfect picture for today...because on Monday, I get to share Katie's story in our next installment of "In Their Own Words".

One of the amazing benefits of breastfeeding is that the mother creates oxytocin, the hormone of social relationships. Not only does it create calm for the mother and the nursling; it actually has the potential to create calm in the entire space they occupy.

For more reading on oxytocin, click HERE for an article from Scientific American.

In Their Own Words: Tanya...Part 1

"In Their Own Words" is a blog series we share to bring you "real life" experiences from other mothers and their families.  Would you like to share your story? Please email me at krystyna@sweetpeabirths.com to get started.

.
As a mother to two girls I feel even more of a responsibility to normalize breastfeeding. My amazing mother did that for me and I am forever grateful. I grew up knowing that breastfeeding was a wonderful way to nourish and bond with your baby.

From the moment I knew I wanted to be a mom, I knew I would breastfeed.

Breastfeeding Rooted in Nature

"A baby nursing at a mother's breast...is an undeniable affirmation of our rootedness in nature"

Breastfeeding is Charming

It's always a great reminder that breasts have a biological function: they are mammary glands designed to make milk for the babies a woman will bear.

Some make the mistake of thinking females are biologically complete when they start their menses. In fact, a woman is biologically "fully mature" when she starts to lactate.

So yes, breastfeeding is utilitarian.  It is also really sexy to use your body to it's fullest expression.  Feed your baby with pride: your breasts are gorgeous with or without a baby latched on to them.

Wisdom Wednesday: To your health

I recently shared an image of full-term breastfeeding on our Instagram, and someone asked me if it was "necessary" to nurse like that in public.

My answer: It is always "necessary" to show up for your child as their mother.  Whether that comfort is a kind smile, a loving embrace, or pressed to the breast, responding to your child is not just about feeding, it's about building the trust that you will always be there for them.

As the initial social bond that a child forms, the love shared between a mother and child is critical to the child's social development.

To Look or Not to Look

Human breasts have been used to nourish human infants since time immemorial.  There was a time when the nursing madonna was one of the cherished subjects for artists worldwide.

Here is an insight from artelisa's blog,Art history, symbolism, and legends:

"Milk was a symbol of wisdom, and not just an earthly wisdom. It was a supernatural wisdom of knowledge of things divine, and given as a gift of grace.

A Choice for Every Baby

While breastfeeding may not seem the right choice for every parent, it is the best choice for every baby. ~Amy Spangler

Here is our official welcome to our annual Breastfeeding Awareness Month photo series!!

We have had the honor of teaching over 100 students…and we have Sweet Peas in all different age ranges that are breastfeeding.  We invite our alumni to an annual photo shoot sponsored by Modern Mommy and SPB; with the understanding that we are going to be sharing them all over social media to help normalize breastfeeding during the month of August.

Hello from SPB

Hello, readers <3

Coming up!!

It has been a huge season of change for us at the Bowman House.  A season of grief, a month of moving, and now we are back.  We thank God for our good health and a happy family - there is much to be grateful for in spite of all the upheaval.

Here is our first installment back on the VLOG, announcing all the events happening for Breastfeeding Awareness Month that starts next week!
