Q&A with SPB: Midwifery Care

Happy International Day of the Midwife to the midwives of the world.

We are so blessed with so many amazing midwives in our birth community.  Here is a little more about why Sweet Pea Births advocates for midwifery care to be an available option to all birthing families:

Today's VLOG is all about the things that you *can* control in the very unplannable process of pregnancy, labor, birth and the childbearing year.

Q&A with SPB: How can I have a healthy pregnancy?
Many of us strive for a healthy pregnancy so we can have a great birth experience. Here are two things you can do, and what else to consider beyond that.Today's links for more information can be ...

Q&A with SPB: Changing Locations During Labor

I taped my first vlog this morning!!

When to go to the birthplace is a common question we get from our students, who are still primarily choosing to birth in a hospital setting. This information is also applicable if you are transferring to a birth center or having a non-emergent homebirth transfer.

A non-emergent transfer is the most common type of transfer when it happens in a homebirth setting.  The midwife and patient decide together that the family wants a different kind of observation if they feel things might be shifting away from healthy and low-risk.

Monday Mantra: Give Up Birthing

I continue to search for words that are not "Birth Bumper Stickers", and instead allow for a mother to reflect and find meaning for herself and her particular birth journey.

Today I was feeling like a little Georgia O'Keefe was called for - so many of her images are about openings, and that is exactly what I invite you to do as you experience pregnancy and birth journey: open ourselves to the experience and embrace the lessons that lie within it.

No matter how we birth, after the Birth-Day, we all become parents.

Birth Story: Baby P Born At Home

We are thrilled and honored to share a very special birth story today.  Our guest blogger, Cassandra is a newly minted mother of two - congratulations!!  Today she shares the story of Baby P's arrival. It is the complete opposite oflast week's marathon labor birth story. She and Baby P definitely had a different path!

Baby P is baby #2 for our family; you can read my son’s home birth story from 2012here on the blog.

Bradley Method® natural childbirth classes offered in Arizona: Chandler, Tempe, Ahwatukee, Gilbert, Mesa, Scottsdale, PaysonOur goal is to prepare families to have a natural birth by teaching a mom and her loving coach to labor together.  The reality is that even with the best preparation, birth is unique, fluid and unpredictable.  Our experience as natural childbirth educators is that even if your birth does not go according to your plan, a comprehensive education like The Bradley Method® will pave the way for you to have your best possible birth with a Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby outcome.

Monday Mantra: Your Best Birth

If you follow us on social media, you probably know that Cassandra, our guest blogger and social media maven, is expecting her second Sweet Pea any day now.  As a matter of fact, she is 41 weeks today.

When we were corresponding last week, she sent a plea that most pregnant women in their last weeks of pregnancy send:
“I need something; grounding, reassurance; I’m not sure!”

I sent her some ideas to help pass the time until it’s “real McCoy” labor…she will be writing a post about that later in the week (maybe!

It’s birth story day!!  This week I am sharing a birth story from our Fall 2012 class.  In today's video, Courtney is talking about her family's birth journey with our Winter 2012-13 class.  Jake was working, so Courtney shares his words of wisdom for coaches, too.

Here is their backstory:

  • Courtney was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes via blood glucose test (usually administered between 24 – 28 weeks of pregnancy)
  • High Blood Pressure was measured at office visits from 36 weeks on; whenever she checked her blood pressure at home, it was normal

Info Sheet: Water Birth

Perfect info sheet to share this month - if you are considering a water birth, you are not alone.  Today's pictures are from Cassandra's first birth journey...wishing her and baby #2 all the best as they prepare to journey together this month.

*Definition of Waterbirth:
Immersion in water during labor and childbirth, giving birth immersed in water.

Birth IS A Body at Peak Performance

Dr. Bradley's natural birth principles are centered around supporting the laboring mother without interrupting her labor.  He describes the six needs of a laboring mother in his book, Husband-Coached Childbirth (you can find a brief synopsisHERE).

I always enjoy reading other authors who promote the same philosophy from their unique experience and perspective.  One of the books that was part of our re-certification a couple of years ago (that I now get to share with students through our lending library) is
