Toxins All Around Us - Part 2

Toxins All Around Us Part 2

Maybe you are here because you read the ingredient list in Part 1 and are wondering what is in the products you use for your children.  Maybe you are here because you just started your search for healthier options.

This is by no means a complete list – this is just a start.  My favorite database is “being refreshed” right now, so this is just a list of products I picked out based on what we use in our home and products that I recognize from the store shelves when we go shopping.

I strongly recommend you check out the Environmental Working Group SkinDeep Database when it is refreshed.  In the meantime, scan the list below to see if your family has any of these products.  The ones at the top of the list contain the most potential toxins as per the list in Part 1 of Toxins All Around Us.  As you continue down the list, the products have one or none of the potentially toxic ingredients listed in Part 1.

How many potential toxins are too many?  Each family has to make that choice for themselves.  Use common "label" sense when you read ingredients.  The ingredients are listed in order of proportion in the finished product.  The first ingredient listed in the manufacturer’s “recipe” is present in the greatest quantity, with everything in between listed in descending order, and the ingredient found at the end of the list is in the smallest measurement in the product.
NOTE:  Some products contain sodium trideceth sulfate or , which are ingredients with "eth" in the middle (refer back to Part 1 of this post).  So far, I have not found anything posted about it that strongly convinces me one way or another.  If it appears in the ingredient list, the (+) sign will appear next to the total potential toxins.

Are you interested in having your or your child’s personal care items added to this list?  Let me know – I already have three more brands in the queue from friends that read what I was researching these days.  In addition, once the EWG gets their SkinDeep Database ( ) up and running, you will probably be able to check your items against their comprehensive cosmetic and personal care product ratings system.

In the short-term, here is a guide you can print out and carry with you:
EWG Cosmetic Tip Sheet

If I found the ingredient list on a website, I linked back to it so you can read it for yourself.  I know that things on the internet change, so if I read somewhere else that a formula changes, I will try to reflect that here.
