Tips for Morning Sickness

Anytime a request comes across my desk three times in the same week, I figure it’s time to write a blog post about it.  And so it was with morning sickness this week.  It is so exciting to hear that our alums are expecting again - some of the best news that there is!!

Here is a collection of tips gathered from our Sweet Pea Births students, some things that have worked for me, and my favorite links to share with mamas who are trying to get past the first trimester as best as they can.  For most women, the second trimester is amazing – really – hang in there for the honeymoon period!!

Suggestions from our students:

  • Organic lowfat greek yogurt
  • Banana
  • Saltines
  • Almonds
  • Rise brand protein bars, especially the almond honey

Info we offer in class:

  • Eat small portions throughout the day instead of the traditional big breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Drink a little before your meal, and then after you have finished eating
  • High fiber, high protein foods – see some of our recommendations HERE and HERE

Natural remedies for nausea:

  • Ginger
  • Lemon
  • Mint

One idea is to start with club soda or sparkling water (i.e., Perrier) as a base, and experiment to see if adding some lemon juice, grated ginger root, or mint extract will help with the nausea.  We make mint tea with leaves from our herb garden when we have upset tummies – it may help in your pregnancy as well.

If you do not have the time or inclination to DIY, an over-the-counter, ready to go remedy is the Morning Wellness Tea http://www.earthmamaangelbaby.com/pregnancy/morning-wellness-tea.html made by Earth Mama Angel Baby.  You know you are getting organic, Non-GMO goodness when you purchase their products – definitely a good choice if you are avoiding toxins and going the natural route in your pregnancy.

Besides finding foods that stop the stomach flip-flops, remember that there are two keys to great health in every season of life: rest and relaxation.

Rest:  Make sure you are getting enough sleep – even if you are not showing yet, your body is completely focused on growing a new human right now!  Maybe you can’t sleep through the night anymore – don’t underestimate the power of a good nap during the day!  Even if you lay down for as little as 20 minutes, you give your body the opportunity to re-charge the battery and have a strong finish to your day.

Relaxation: Make time to take deep breaths each and every day.  Having a little snack before you get out of bed, and taking a few minutes to deep breathe and meditate can go a long way towards having a peaceful frame of mind to walk with through the day.
Consider using flower essences aromatherapy to add another layer of peace.  Your baby feels all your energy – it is a wonderful gift to have an intentional, loving pregnancy.
