Monday Mantra: Trust Your Pilot

Thank you, Cassandra, for today's image!  This is one of my favorite sayings as it relates to your baby being an active participant in the birth process. 

The medical model has 3 P's:
  1. Power ~ your contractions
  2. Passage ~ your pelvis
  3. Passenger ~ your baby

The Midwifery Model of Care has 5 P's:
  1. Psyche ~ the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of birth
  2. Power ~ your contractions
  3. Passenger ~ your baby
  4. Passage ~ your pelvis
  5. Position ~ your position as it relates to where you need to be according to your contractions and the baby's position

So as teachers of The Bradley Method® we are definitely more in line with the Midwifery Model of care...except for one word.  We believe that your baby is very much A PILOT.

Your baby's first system to develop is the nervous system...it's little brain is one of the first organ's to come "on-line", as it were.  We believe your baby does know how it has to come out...and that they will work with your body to determine the best way to exit from it's warm cocoon into your waiting arms.

As instructors, we encourage our students to do everything they can to stay healthy and low risk:
  • Eat Well: To the best of your ability and your budget, enjoy whole food nutrition without chemicals, additives or preservatives.
  • Exercise: Pregnancy exercises to tone your back, belly and bottom, and safe cardiovascular activities at your fitness level to build your stamina.
  • Education: About the physiology of birth, birth choices, interventions and how to avoid them, birth plan, breastfeeding, and anything else that will help you feel empowered to make the best decisions for you and baby during your pregnancy, labor and birth.
  • Avoid Harmful Substances: Toxins and chemicals are all around us: in our homes, our personal care items, and at our workplace ~ do your best to avoid unnecessary drugs, junk food, and anything else that may harm you or your baby.
  • Relaxation: Take time every day to practice deep abdominal breathing, get adequate rest, and practice the different relaxation tools they are learning in The Bradley Method® class, a prenatal yoga class, or guided meditations - anything and everything that brings you peace and confidence in your ability to birth.

By doing those things, you are setting you and your little pilot up to be able to do everything you were designed to do naturally.  There are times when situations will arise that move mom and/or baby into a higher risk level.  In those times, call upon your education about birth, your care provider that supports your choice for as many natural birth elements as possible in your risk situation, and good communication between your partner, yourself and your care team to determine what the best choices are for a Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby outcome.

Take heart in the fact that our design is such that as women, we are able to birth, and babies are designed to be birthed.  All things being equal and low-risk, you can trust that your baby is naturally doing what it should to align in your pelvis and descend from your womb, right into your waiting arms.
