Bradley Method® couples have a well-stocked "Pain Relief Toolbox"

Bradley Method® students who attend all twelve classes, and have been faithful to the reading and homework arrive at the hospital with a toolbox full of pain management techniques.  It is so humbling to hear a couple say, “We couldn’t have done it without you.”  The truth is, that it is thanks to their hard work and dedication that they feel that way.  We present the same information to every student.  It is our students who deserve all the credit when they take that information to heart and use it to achieve the goal of The Bradley Method®: Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby.
 
Throughout the class curriculum we cover five topics that help a mother stay healthy and low risk so that she is more likely to have the un-medicated birth she desires.  The lower her risk, the more choices are available to her.  We also teach a new relaxation technique every week, all of which contribute to the full toolbox a prepared couple takes with them to the hospital.  Relaxation is the key to the Bradley Method®.
 
Once we have covered the basics of keeping mom healthy and low-risk, we start introducing labor rehearsals every week.  Bradley Method® classes teach couples different ways to labor that work with the body and treat gravity as our friend.  “Practice makes prepared” when it comes to childbirth.  In a society where so few of us have witnessed a birth outside of our own, it helps to start to develop some muscle memory and to start preparing our bodies for the positions we might want to use during labor and delivery.
 
What else goes in the toolbox?  A list of mom’s favorite comfort measures and how she likes to deal with pain, maybe a tennis ball or rice sock for counter-pressure, some snacks, a reminder to keep mom hydrated every hour she is in labor and a coach card for the Coach.  The coach can show this card with pride – it is a testament to the fact that he or she completed a twelve-week series of classes with their partner and that they are fully invested in helping mom and baby have the birth they want and need to achieve the goal of Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby.
 
If you are considering a birth without pain relief drugs, then I strongly encourage you to find a Bradley Method® class in your area.  Our twelve-week curriculum is by far the most comprehensive, covering many aspects of pregnancy, labor and delivery, postpartum care and breastfeeding. We strive to prepare mom and coach not just for the birth of their child.  Childbirth is the birth of a family and a lifelong relationship that starts with one beautiful gift: Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby.
